The Further Awesome Adventures of the Unsinkable Stephanie Brown #15

Chupacabrageddon!

PAGE ONE: Four panels.

PANEL ONE: Nell Little, a black girl in a batgirl shirt, and her mother are sitting at a table eating dinner. Nell’s mother is pointing to the girl’s plate which has some unfinished purple cabbage on it.

MRS. LITTLE: Eat your veggies, dear.

PANEL TWO: Nell is grinning and twirling her fork as her mother gives her a stern look.

NELL: Oh Mom...

MRS. LITTLE: Do you want to go see Miss Brown arrive back at the airport or not, young lady?

PANEL THREE: Nell is frowning and slumping as her mother nods to her.

NELL: Yes ma’am... but...

MRS. LITTLE: Every bit of it!

PANEL FOUR: Nell makes a bitter pouty face as she forks a piece of purple vegetable.

******

PAGE TWO: Four panels.

PANEL ONE: Nell, in batgirl shirt and jeans, is tackle hugging Steph Brown who wears over purple leggings an oversized lavender sweatshirt belted with a natural brown leather belt that matches her ankle boots. They are inside an airport terminal setting.

CAPTION: A plate of purple cabbage later.

NELL: Steph!

STEPH: Whoa Nelly!

PANEL TWO: Mrs. Little, wearing a nice dress, is smiling at a smirking Joe who is wearing his usual trousers, open vest and is carrying Steph’s purple duffle. The gold orb hangs from a chain around Joe’s neck.

MRS. LITTLE: She was so excited she even ate her vegetables.

JOE: Good.

PANEL THREE: Steph is holding a grinning Nell by the shoulders. Steph is smiling at the girl as if in appraisal. Somewhere in the background of the terminal setting is a television screen on which the words “BREAKING NEWS” are flashing.

STEPH: I swear you’re bigger every time I see you!

NELL: I just started basketball!

PANEL FOUR: Steph has her hand on Nell’s shoulder. Steph, Nell, her mother and Joe are all walking along through the terminal.

STEPH: That’s awesome, Nell! I can’t wait to see you play!

******

PAGE THREE: Four panels.

PANEL ONE: Steph is blinking and has cocked her head to one side.

PROXY (jagged bubble at Steph’s ear): Welcome home, Steph, trouble seems to have followed you back.

STEPH: What?

PROXY (jagged bubble): Can you see a TV screen?

PANEL TWO: This panel is a television screen with an image of a chupacabra on it. It is a nasty looking little reptilian creature with red eyes and fangs that looks a bit like a cross between a gremlin and a mini-godzilla. See issue #1. There is type running across the bottom of the screen. “HOAX OR ALIEN INVASION? YOU DECIDE!”

PANEL THREE: This is a close-up of Steph gasping, her eyes wide.

STEPH: Chupacabra!

PROXY (jagged bubble): Multiple reports from the south and west but...

PANEL FOUR: All four people in the airport are watching the screen. Joe has dropped the purple duffle to the floor at his feet. The image has switched to one of the waterfront where fishmen (see issue #6) are seen swarming over a ship in dock. Nell’s mother has a confused expression. Nell has an excited one. Joe has a stern one. Steph is biting her lip.

PROXY (jagged bubble): It gets worse... fishmen from the east... sasquatch from the north... a flying saucer over the harbor... and they’re all converging on...

******

PAGE FOUR: Four panels.

PANEL ONE: Steph has a suddenly determined expression.

STEPH: The crystal skulls!

PANEL TWO: Mrs. Little is gaping at Steph as Joe nods. Nell has disappeared.

MRS. LITTLE: The what?

STEPH: Long story.

JOE: Quinientos años de soledad.

PANEL THREE: Steph has her hand on Mrs. Little’s shoulder as she speaks to her.

STEPH: Take Nell home and lock the doors... immediately!

PANEL FOUR: Steph and Joe are hurrying toward the exit of the terminal. Joe is carrying Steph’s big purple duffle. Mrs. Little has a worried expression as she looks around in the background unable to find Nell.

MRS. LITTLE: Oh dear god... where did that girl go now?

STEPH: Proxy, contact everyone the Debs know while Joe and I get the thirteenth skull to Gotham U! We’ll need all the help we can get to prevent...

PAGE FIVE: Five panels.

PANEL ONE: Steph is smiling and clutching Joe’s shoulder as he drives the cab. Joe is wearing an open vest and the gold orb is hanging around his neck.

STEPH: Sure wish I could recall what happened at Machu Picchu, but those flowers I ate must have clouded my mind.

JOE: Joe tambien... but Steph get skull.

PANEL TWO: Steph is kissing Joe on the cheek.

STEPH: Mmhhmmph... true, cutie!

PANEL THREE: Joe has a silly grin on his face as Steph flops back in her seat.

STEPH: Paine wants me to bring it to the museum.

PROXY (jagged bubble): Well that IS where the vault is located.

PANEL FOUR: Joe is glancing sideways at Steph who is making a bit of a wry face.

JOE: Joe drive!

STEPH: Hopefully Joe and I can secure all the skulls!

PROXY (jagged bubble): Everyone’s responding even as the armies of creatures converge.

PANEL FIVE: Steph and Joe are getting out of the taxi in front of the Gotham University Museum of Unnatural History. Joe is swinging the purple duffle over his shoulder.

STEPH: Here we go!

PROXY (jagged bubble): Good luck!

******

PAGE SIX: Splash page. Steph and Joe have entered the museum. Professor Paine in a tent-like dress looks larger and more bloated than ever. She has a smile on her face and is reaching out a hand. Around her on the floor of the museum are the twelve crystal skulls previously collected, arranged in a circle like the hours on a clock.

PAINE: Good work, Brown! Give it to me! Oh I see you brought your boy...

STEPH: I’ve been onto your skullduggery for a while now, Professor!

******

PAGE SEVEN: Four panels.

PANEL SEVEN: Professor Paine is smirking in sinister fashion.

PAINE: Really? Not that it matters, but how?

PANEL EIGHT: Steph is kneeling as if to pick up a skull from the floor.

STEPH: It just didn’t all add up... I even suspect it was you who brought that Mayan mummy to life here in the museum last year.

PANEL NINE: Professor Paine is laughing now, her face becoming grotesque, almost like her smile is tearing the head itself open as it spreads wider than possible.

PAINE: I was annoyed until I realized that you could be the perfect unwitting fool to collect the skulls for me, Brown!

PANEL TEN: Steph is scowling as Joe puts purple duffle on the floor and reaches for one of the skulls on the floor.

STEPH: Whatever you’re planning we’re not going to let it happen!

******

PAGE EIGHT: Splash page. Steph and Joe are looking up in disbelief, their jaws dropping. What was Professor Paine is shedding its skin and stepping forth, a huge muscular beast seemingly without skin, it’s exposed muscles seemingly pulsing with pain and power as its size grows. It still wears Professor Paine’s flesh like a hoodie, not unlike the hooded girl seem many times before. It points a bloody finger at them as it licks its lips. It is the demon Paindora.

PAINDORA: It’s too late to stop me from casting aside this grotesque shell of human flesh!

STEPH: Eww, gross!

PAINDORA: I AM PAIN! I shall dine on your souls and dress in your skins!

STEPH: Oh crap.

******

PAGE NINE: Three panels.

PANEL ONE: An animated Mayan mummy (from opening of issue #1) is jerking a surprised Joe to his feet from behind.

JOE: Ungh.

PANEL TWO: A flailing Steph is being jerked up from behind by an Egyptian mummy.

STEPH: Gurk.

PANEL THREE: The demon has cast aside Paine’s skin and appears to be laughing as the mummies restrain the struggling Steph and Joe.

PAINDORA: Don’t go anywhere! I may require a human sacrifice or two!

PROXY (jagged bubble): Steph?

******

PAGE  TEN AND ELEVEN: Seven-panel two-page splash centerfold spread depicts the battles taking place all over Gotham City. These battles are in six separate frames radiating outward from an oval frame in the center of the spread. They involve many of the vilains and heroes that have appeared in previous issues.

PANEL ONE (center oval): The demon is reaching for the purple duffle lying on the floor inside the circle of skulls.

PAINDORA: And with the thirteenth skull I shall open the portal and bring an end to the age of man...

PANEL TWO (12 o’clock): A flying Supergirl is punching and exploding a missile launched from Flamebrain’s flying saucer high over the city. “KABOOM!”

PANEL THREE (2 o’clock): Richard Dragon and the yeti Pongo are in hand to hand combat with a tribe of angry sasquatch.

DRAGON: The numbers are not on our side...

PANEL FOUR (4 o’clock): Aquaman is battling a horde of fishmen, using his trident.

AQUAMAN: On my ancestors heads I will not fail Miss Brown!

PANEL FIVE (6 o’clock): Batman and Damian Robin are engaging Eldorado and the Foil in hand to hand combat. Batman is swinging Damian Robin around so that he is kicking Eldorado from the back of the Foil’s horse where he was sitting behind the Foil.

BATMAN: Robin, take Goldilocks!

ROBIN: Yes, sir!

PANEL SIX (8 o’clock): Fly Girl is flying over a huge mass of chupacabras on the ground and blasting away even as flying chupacabras fill the sky around her.

FLY-GIRL: There must be millions!

PROXY (jagged bubble overlaps panels six and seven): I’m coming!

PANEL SEVEN (10 o’clock): Black Bat is battling the Ninjador of the Night in hand to hand combat, dragon kicking through his midsection but with little effect.

BLACK BAT: Didn’t even flinch!

******

PAGE TWELVE: Six panels.

PANEL ONE: Nell’s head is sticking out of the purple duffle and she is tasing the reaching hand of the demon Paindora with a taser on which appears a little bat symbol. “BZZT!!”

NELL: No way! Let Steph go!

PANEL TWO: Demon Paindora is rearing back on cloven hooved legs, monstrous face contorted in rage as it points a clawed finger at Nell who is scrambling past the restrained Steph and Joe with the crystal skull in her hands.

PAINDORA: Thief!

PANEL THREE: Nell is staring up wide-eyed from between the legs of Steph and the mummy that restrains Steph, skull tucked under her arm, her knuckles white as her little hands clench nervously at the loose ends of bandages dangling from the mummy’s legs.

STEPH: Run, Nell!

PANEL FOUR: Nell is running with the skull in her hands as the looming demon grins wickedly and reaches for her with a clawed hand, plucking her up by the back of the batgirl shirt.

PAINDORA: I’ll eat you first!

PANEL FIVE: Steph has unbelted her lavender sweatshirt and is ducking down, coming out of the sweatshirt and thusly the grip of the mummy.

STEPH: Noooooooo...!

PANEL SIX: Steph, now dressed in a tight purple leggings and lavender sports bra is high kicking under the demon’s reaching arm.  The clawed hand is dropping Nell to the floor and the demon is screeching in rage.

PAINDORA: Brrrown!!

******

PAGE THIRTEEN: Six panels.

PANEL ONE: The mummy from which Steph escaped is looking at the empty lavender sweatshirt in its hands with a perplexed expression as the looming demon Paindora entreats it.

MUMMY: Grrr...

PAINDORA: Get the girl!

PANEL TWO: The mummy is tearing the shirt apart and charging after Nell, tripping as the loose bandages on it’s legs have been tied together. This panel should perhaps be a progression of three posings of the mummy as it trips and falls to the floor, coming up short of Nell. “KRRRASH!”

PANEL THREE: The demon Paindora has caught Steph and is choking her with one massive red arm while placing the point of a claw to Steph’s chest with the other hand. Steph is grimacing but seemingly trying to shake her head.

PAINDORA: Damn it, girl! Give me that skull or I’ll gut her like a fish!

STEPH: Nngh... Nnll... rgh!

PANEL FOUR: Nell has a horrified expression as she holds the skull before her.

NELL: But, Steph...

PANEL FIVE: The demon Paindora wears a sinister smirk on its face as it continues to choke Steph. Steph’s eyes are rolling back and her body going limp.

PAINDORA: Good girl...

PANEL SIX: Paindora is holding the skull high and grinning wickedly. Her mummy minions flank her. Joe and Nell rush to Steph’s body on the floor at the demon’s feet.

PAINDORA: You saved Brown a gutting if not her worthless life!

NELL: But I...

JOE: Steph!

******

PAGE FOURTEEN: Six panels.

PANEL ONE: Zombat, the Ninjador of the Night, is swinging a light pole like a baseball bat. Black Bat is doubled over the pole as it strikes her in the gut.

BLACK BAT: Ooph!

PANEL TWO: Black Bat is on hands and knees, gasping for breath, henchhands swarming all over her arms and legs as Zombat prepares to bring the pole down over her head.

ZOMBAT: Adios, dragon girl!

PROXY (jagged bubble overlaps panels two and three): Almost there!

PANEL THREE: Fly-Girl is being overwhelmed by a swarm of flying chupacabra in mid-air.

FLY-GIRL: Hurry, Proxy! Too many...

PANEL FOUR: The vicious little creatures have dragged Fly-Girl to the ground. They are crawling all over her as they restrain her and several have bared fangs as if about to sink them into her.

FLY-GIRL: Noooo...

PANEL FIVE: There is a fountain behind the battle. The Foil’s horse is rearing up and it’s hooves are kicking Batman backwards. “KRUKK!” Damian Robin is delivering a neck breaker to Eldorado even as the midget in gold flips him toward the fountain. “KRAKK!!”

BATMAN: Ughh.

PANEL SIX: Batman is down on his back, looking very stunned and nearly unconsciousness as the Foil prepares to thrust the point of his foil right through Batman’s chest. Damian Robin’s head is being held underwater in the fountain by Eldorado.

ROBIN: Glub glub glub...

******

PAGE FIFTEEN: Six panels.

PANEL ONE: Aquaman is skewering one fishman with his trident even as more fishmen wrench the trident from his hands.

AQUAMAN: Can’t... let them...

PANEL TWO: Aquaman is being restrained by a dozen fishmen as another fishman prepares to thrust his own trident into him.

AQUAMAN: Through.

PANEL THREE: The yeti Pongo is swinging a tree trunk that appears to have been ripped up by the roots at attacking sasquatches. “SWAKKK!!” Richard Dragon is upper cutting one of many sasquatches approaching them from behind. “THWAK!”

PANEL FOUR: The company of sasquatches have born Dragon and Pongo to the ground and have bared claws to rip them apart.

DRAGON: I hope we bought Steph enough time!

PANEL FIVE: Supergirl has been caught in an orangish beam emanating from Flamebrain’s flying saucer and is tumbling toward the ground.

SUPERGIRL: Nngh...

PANEL SIX: Supergirl is on the ground beneath the hovering saucer. She is looking up from hands and knees, sweat beading up on her grimacing face. She is in obvious pain.

SUPERGIRL: So weak...

FLAMEBRAIN (bubble from saucer): Time to die, meddlesome girl!

******

PAGE SIXTEEN: Splash page. The demon Paindora is holding a crytal skull aloft in one hand as mist swirls up from the floor inside the circle of crystal skulls. Near the demon’s feet Joe and Nell are crouching over a prone Steph.

NELL: She’s not breathing!

JOE: No pulse.

PAINDORA: She’s dead, you fools! As shall be all who stand against me!

******

PAGE SEVENTEEN: Three panels.

PANEL ONE: Joe and Nell are on their knees beside a prone Steph. Nell is looking up at Joe. Joe has a hand on her shoulder. Nell is reaching for the gold orb hanging around his neck. Both have tears in their eyes.

JOE: Must be strong.

PANEL TWO: Nell beats on Steph’s chest with her fists and Joe leans over to kiss Steph on the lips as the mists swirl up about them.

NELL: Nooo... Steph, you can’t give up!

PANEL THREE: Joe and Nell are silhouette’s lost in the swirling mists at the feet of Paindora. Paindora has arms spread wide as is the wicked smile on her face. Her eyes are wide as if seeing something magnificiently wonderous.

DRAGON: Odd. They flee.

PANEL THREE: The fishmen are fleeing as Aquaman raises his trident.

AQUAMAN: Like they saw a ghost.

PANEL FOUR: Batman is pulling a sputtering Damain Robin from the fountain as Eldorado rides off with the Foil. Eldorado is looking back, eyes wide behind the gold mask as he points a gloved finger at something beyond them.

ROBIN: Cough. Snort.

BATMAN: Son!

ELDORADO: Good luck with that!

******

PAGE NINETEEN: Five panels.

PANEL ONE: Black Bat and Fly-Girl stand side by side as behind them the chupacabras and Zombat flee after Eldorado and the Foil.

FLY-GIRL: It’s about time...

PROXY (jagged bubble): Sorry it took so long... I’m still learning the interface...

PANEL TWO: Proxy/Wendy is sitting at the controls in the head of the giant Fly-Girl mecha. She is grinning and waving to her friends on the ground below.

PROXY: Look at them run... I guess they didn’t want any part of...

PROXY: What?

******

**UPDATE 11/14/12**
Altered a few lines on page five. I thought I would point this out for anyone following the story as it actually changes an aspect of the story in that now Steph does not remember what happened beyond the mists at Machu Picchu. Started working on the next issue and decided it might be more interesting this way. ;)

This is a fan fiction exercise in comic strip writing. Former Spoiler/Robin/Batgirl Stephanie Brown is property of DC Comics along as well as many of the characters who appear in this issue. Other characters like Joe, Professor Paine, Eldorado, Zombat, Flamebrain, The Foil and Pongo are my creations.

This issue came together pretty quickly and is the first half of the big finale of my planned run of Steph Adventure stories. I've still got about three different ways I could go in the next issue so I reserve the right to come back and change the tagline teaser for next month that appears a the end of the script.

Let me know what you think. Hope you get a kick out of it!

Awesome! Of course, there's not enough ink the ENTIRE WORLD to draw this, but still. Also: Many issues ago when I said I suspected I knew where this was headed? I was right. Obviously Paine was collecting the spheres because she was the one who wanted bring about Chupacabrageddon!

I am terribly amused by all the supernatural entities having been trying to prevent this catastrophe from happening, when everyone was trying to stop them. At least I think that's what was happening. I can't imagine a sasquatch fighting for the bad guys!
